A Chicago-style hot dog is not just a food. It’s a culinary icon created by and for Chicagoans. So how do you capture the spirit of a city’s food culture and turn it into a snack? In the case of Foxtrot, being from Chicago certainly helps.

From nine ingredients cobbled together in the raucous Maxwell Street Market to a single bite of unapologetic Chicago pride, each chip shoulders a taste of the city’s history, zest, and avid disdain for ketchup.

ORIGIN:

While hot dogs have been feeding Americans since the 1860s, the famous 9-ingredient Chicago-style hot dog began as a quick and affordable depression-era meal sold at the Maxwell Street Market. And while they’re a little more expensive than their original 5¢ price tag, they’ve engrained themselves as a Chicago staple and source of pride.

Working with Foxtrot to recreate an icon as a snack was a tall task. For Chicagoans, it’s not just about flavor, it’s about culture and authenticity. Taking cues from countless painted signs throughout the city, our goal was to create a bag that was instantly recognizable and irresistible to pick up.

We drew inspiration from the haphazard, hand-painted, clipart style signs found at pop-ups, carts, and stands throughout the city streets. The bag design riffs off the rich collections of memorabilia found on the walls of local dives and, like the hot dog itself, the celebration of “more is more.”
